BYDESIGN.” Sustainability is one ofthepillarsofourcurriculum.We teach ourstudents,especially thoseinthedesign and architecture,and mastersin constructionmanagementonline, thateverythingtheydesign,fromclothing tofurnitureto buildings,aswell ashowthose buildingsareconstructed,mustmakeefficientuseofresources.Sustainabilityisa fundamental and essentialaspectofpractice,another pillar ofourcurriculum.

Greatdesigners areacutely awareofresources.Itaffectseveryaspectoftheirlives:It’s thecoffeecup theyuse,the car theydrive,thestructurestheydesign,andhow they respecttheenvironmentand the people who live andworkandworship there.I often tellstudentsthatdesignisn’tsomething you stopandstartin your life.Designisyour life.Sustainability has to jointhatcircle ofwhoyou are.When you thinkaboutwherewe liveand theresourceswehave,weareata momentin time whenwe haveto learn to use theseresourcesin amuch better way. OurnewSchool“Green.By Design.”initiativechallengesusto be sustainable acrossthe board.Itremindsus to ask ourselves,Do I really need to printthis out? Isthis thebest way to commute to campus? Can someone else in theMaterials Lab usethe scrap from my project?Should thestructureI’mdesigninghavea buildingenvelopethatwill require less energy? “Green.ByDesign.”isalso a reminderthatgreatthingshappen when wepartnerwith our students.Theideaand thedrivebehind itcomefromthecollaborationbetween our StudentLife officeandour StudentCouncil.Theyidentified this wayto connectour missionto our dailycampusroutines.Oneofourfirstactionswillbe toeliminate disposable cupsbygiving studentsbottles andmugsthey can reuse.This may seem like asmalleffort,butweuse60,000cupsayear—enough to encircleourbuilding 19times!
