DESIGNMIND: NEWSCHOOL’SNORTHERNSTAR –HUMAN-CENTEREDDESIGN For thousandsofyears,theNorthernStar hasbeen a brightand fixed pointfor travelers on theirjourneys.A NorthernStar can also bea metaphoricalguidefor organizationsas theyjourneytoward their owndesireddestination.Anorthstaraspirationisimportant becauseitbringsclarity to whatcan otherwisebe adiversecommunity ofopinions abouttheworld.Itbringsfocus to studentand faculty scholarshipand differentiates us fromother architecture and design schools.Atour convocation inOctober,I revealed NewSchool’sNorthernStar:human-centereddesign.Thisassertiondidnotcome
superficially.Ratherithasevolved outofa historyofconcernfor thehuman experience and theresponsibilityforhumanwelfareinthedesignofbuildings,mediaoptions and artifacts thatdefine our experiencein the world. There aremanyinterpretationsforthedefinitionofhuman-centereddesign,and a vigorousdiscoursehasbegun among studentsatfaculty within theNewSchool community.Thatobserved,itis agreeduponthathuman-centereddesignis aproblem- solvingapproachthatstartsand endswithpeople.Designersimmersethemselvesinthe needs and challengesofpeople whowillexperiencetheir projectsothatthey gaina deepunderstandingand empathy.Itis a creativeandcollaborativeprocessthatinvolves brainstorming and rapid,iterativeprototypingto bringan innovativeand successful project to life—for people. Our focuson thehumanexperienceinallthatwedo comesaftermuch vitaldiscussion withourfacultythatextendsbeyondmyninemonthsaspresidentto my timeonthe board ofdirectors.Human-centered design istheprimaryorganizingthoughtthatpins our efforts to a deeply held valueforarchitectureand design.We willemphasizethat our studentsbe “citizen architectsanddesigners”who arekeenlyfocused on the experienceofthosewho will live,work,and worshipwith theresultoftheeffortsof architects anddesigners. Wearesocommitted tothisthatwearecreating a neworganizationalstructure.We haveclarifiedourdesignofferingsbyorganizingthestudyofdesignintoproduct, media,interior design,interior decoration,architecture,and designstudies into a School ofArchitecture and Construction Managementand theDomus Academy Schoolof Design.Wehavealsoreconsideredhowweperceivegeneraleducation and aredirecting oureffortstowardIntegrativeStudies.Thissupportsthenotionthatgeneraleducation in a designschoolis anopportunityfor inter-andcross-disciplinarystudyaswell as criticalandcreativethought.Theseeffortssupportthepillarsthatunderlieour curricular experience:professionalpractice,environmentalempathy,humanwelfareand community engagement.Thesepillars arefurtheremphasized inthescholarshipof faculty gathered around four affinity groupingsincluding:design and practice,design andstrategy,designandenvironment,anddesignandhealth.Ultimatelyitisthrough thescholarshipoffacultyandstudentsthatwewillbeknown.Wewishthatreputation to bebuiltupon thatwhichmakesus humanandthatwhich weasdesignerscan amplifyto makeourhumanityeven more visceral. AtNewSchool,human-centereddesignalsomeansdesigningprogramscenteredon our students.Through our newCenter forAcademicandStudentSuccess,weareinvesting
in programsand servicestoenhancethelearningexperiencefor allstudents.This includes: • A Commitmentto Serviceprogramthatwillencouragestudents tobecitizen architectsanddesignerswho addresstheneedsofpeopleinour communities. • Our Green.By Design.initiative,whichbuildson ourlongstanding commitment to sustainability byencouraging theconscioususeofresources and environmental systems. • AGraduateStudentCounciltoaddressthespecificneedsofthisgrowing population. • TheProjectLead Initiative,which willoffer a varietyofopportunities to help • studentsidentifyand develop their leadershipskills. • AFacultyAdvisingInitiativetofoster greater interactionbetweenstudentsand • faculty to assessdegreeprogress,as well asmentoring topreparefor professionalpractice.Apeeradvising programwillcomplementfacultyadvising by connecting new and senior students. • TheWritingInitiativerecognizesthatwritingskills,especiallyinone’sdiscipline, • canbelearned throughpractice andthat theyare a tool for learning and processinginformation. • An initiative toIncreaseInternationalStudentFocusto improveawarenessabout thevalueofour multiculturalstudentbody,faculty andstaffthroughactivities and events. • Theseareambitiousprograms,butguided byourmission,vision,andvalues,aswellas our Northern Star,wecan achievethem.
