Nicholas Mukhtar Healthy Detroit: A Vision for Community Wellness Nicholas Mukhtar is the founder of Healthy Detroit. He is a young, aspiring medical professional with big plans to create a healthier city. At only 24 years of age, he isn't wasting any time and attempting to change the health scene of his old neighborhood, Detroit. He has decided to delay his medical education while pursuing a Master of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University to establish Healthy Detroit, a social movement and non-profit organization promoting healthier lifestyles and environments to prevent chronic disease. Nicholas Mukhtar states, "Healthy Detroit aims to provide residents with the education, resources, and tools they need to live healthy lifestyles at every stage." Since its launch in February 2012, Healthy Detroit has made significant progress toward its objectives. It now has an ambitious strategic plan, a website, merchandise for sale, and a Facebook page. Healthy Detroit aims to influence the city's education, resources, and culture. Nicholas Mukhtar quickly observes that addressing only one aspect will not result in change because they are intricately connected. Healthy Detroit will start with schools and offer a mentorship program lasting over two years in partnership with schools. At each school, public health professionals will notice the current health culture among students, instructors, personnel, and educational plans for well-being training and advancement. Nicholas Mukhtar hopes that by the third year, the schools will be self-sufficient enough to be eligible for the Healthy Detroit Schools designation and blue ribbon certification. Almost 30 schools throughout the city have expressed interest in filling in as pilots. Healthy Detroit additionally plans to incorporate public art and motivating wall paintings by locals, green infrastructure and trees for further developed storm-water the board, recovered materials from deserted structures for park development, rotating district farmers markets every day, metropolitan farms to be integrated into school educational programs and youth instruction, and private security and solar powered lighting for little dependency on city safety administrations. The parks to be developed have yet to be determined. "Data-Driven Detroit will help us figure out population density and where the most children live... the Detroit Recreation Department has offered information about which parks it needs help to maintain," Nicholas Mukhtar says. Healthy Detroit will begin construction early next year, and the parks should be centrally located in each district. Generally speaking, Healthy Detroit's main goal is aggressive yet surely required. Its efforts have the potential to significantly impact the city's residents' overall health because so many of them are affected by chronic diseases and do not have access to safe places to exercise or healthy foods.
