INTRO DUCTION Wood is the most vulnerable material when comes to furniture getting fewer damages. Most of the times we are observing scratches on the wooden furniture.
CAUSES OF SCRATCHES Pets Improper care Heavy usage underestimating after damages Sharp objects Etc.
SCRATCH REMOVAL PROCEDURE Generally, there are two types of scratches observed on the household wooden furniture, depending on which we have to follow the removal procedure.
TEST THE DAMAGE Firstly you must test & analyze the scratch depth level. It will give you an idea about your capability as well. If you think you can't make it then ask for professional help.
RUBBING STEEL WOOL If the scratches are light then you can simply repair it at home. Take a steel wool scrub pad & rub with low force along with the grain of the wood to clean the surface & make it regular. This will ease the further process. Just wipe out the dust before going further.
WHAT IF THE SCRATCHES ARE DEEP? If the scratches are deep then you must go with the sandpaper for sanding. Make sure to sand the surface along with the wood grain or else you may end up having more scratches.
MINERAL SPIRITS Now it's time for mineral spirits. After sanding you must need to clean the wooden surface at the micro level. So you should use mineral spirit for that purpose. Take some spirit on the cloth & rub the sanded area.
WOOD FILLERS You will need wood fillers after this step. Use plastic/steel putty knife to fill the scratches with the wood filler. The plastic putty knife is better in this case if you're doing it for the first time. This will reduce the chances of any future wooden damages.
RE-SANDING Once the wood fillers are dried completely you can start re-sanding. Re-sanding is needed to make the surface in-line, regular. Take a sandpaper of low grade below 120 grit & sand the surface completely. Make sure to get the excess filler out only.
FINISHING After re-sanding you can seal the fillers with the help of varnish, polyurethane or a similar product. I will suggest using lambswool or natural bristle brush instead of foam roller & paintbrush.
PREVENTIVE MEASURES You should not allow your pets to use your wooden furniture Use the protective cover-cloths while using it Never use the sharp objects to clean the wooden surface Don't hesitate to call professional for an opinion regarding the repairs, restoration.
