Ice Storms are brought on by freezing rainfall. When rainfall comes into contact with a freezing cold surface area the rainfall becomes ice on contact. The freezing rainfall includes everything in smooth ice which on areas such as roofs and streets is particularly risky.

Ice Storms Ice storms are basically a big freezing rain storm. As freezing rain begins to fall it forms coats of ice on the objects that it falls upon. The ice starts to accumulate and soon the weight of the ice upon tree branches, power lines, etc., becomes too much and they start to break.
Why do Ice Storms happen • An ice storm happens when a warm air mass collides with a cold air mass. Many ice storms happen every year. • They include cold temperatures, precipitation, and strong winds. • The process of an ice storm is when some water vapor from the warm air condenses into clouds.
How Ice Storms Affects Forest • Ice storms put two main stresses on your woods: extreme cold and excess weight. • Root damage : Ice storms can cause roots to break or begin lifting from the soil, which can in turn weaken your trees and cause them to topple. • Breakage : The weight of accumulated ice can strain even strong trees. It can break a tree’s branches and even its trunk, compromising its structure and leaving it vulnerable to insect pests and disease.
