Everybody knows that solar energy is clean and green, but there are actually many advantages of solar energy. I'll run down 5 of them here. I'd also throw in disadvantages of solar energy. Solar energy (i.e. the energy from the Sun) is abundant, clean, and sustainable. There is enough energy from the Sun to sustain our entire planet for at least another billion years!
The energy source is free, but the manufacturers of solar panels and the power generating companies have to make a profit, so ultimately there is a cost. Here are the advantages & disadvantages of solar energy: Advantages of Solar Energy: 1. Solar energy is a clean and renewable energy source. Once a solar panel is installed, solar energy can be produced free of charge.
2. Save the Money: This is the second big and best point in all advantages because the value of money is high in this world. The installation of a system in your home just takes one time expensive, after that its usage is almost free.
3. Low Maintenance: Once solar lights are installed, it does not cost much to maintain them. Good quality solar lights last for decades without the need to service or maintain them. 4. Save Environment: Solar energy helps to reduce our planet’s environment by reducing our carbon footprint, and many other harmful chemicals. There are no side effects of a panel on the environment as we see the other energy producing systems.
5. Multiple Uses: Solar Energy is generally associated with lighting up houses, streets, communities, villages, towns and so on. However, solar energy is not restricted to this. There are multiple other uses such as heating water at home, keeping houses warm, powering vehicles, powering aeroplanes, cooking, powering calculators, watches, clocks and many more.
Disadvantages of Solar Energy: 1. High Cost: One of the main disadvantages is the high cost of the equipment used to harness solar energy. Solar panels still remain a costly alternative to the use of readily available fossil fuel technologies.
2. Weather Dependency: Solar panels dependence on the type of weather is another disadvantage. Depending on your location, the amount of solar energy during winter months, even on a fully sunny day, can easily be half that of summertime.
3. Large Surface Area Required: Even a residential solar energy system requires a large surface area of solar panels in order for the system to be efficient in providing a source of reliable electricity. In many cases, homeowners install solar panels to their roof, which often has enough space to accommodate such systems. 4. Solar Energy is not always Reliable: Solar energy is very dependable. However, not all solar panels work at night. If the solar panels are not charged enough during the day, the efficiency is reduced. It would then not be reliable enough to provide a good amount of power to sustain an entire household or village.
5. Inefficiency: Most solar panels are not 100% efficient. This means that even though a good amount of electricity is generated using solar energy, about 60% of energy ends up being wasted, while only 40% is actually utilized.
