Aim • Innovative, low-cost, multidisciplinary effort to maximize quality of life in veteran with spinal cord injury and ischial wound by converting his power wheelchair into motorized prone cart. • Relevance • Prone carts can alleviate loss of mobility and independence associated with decreased sitting times. • Not all persons with neurologic impairment can use traditional manual prone carts. • Specialized motorized prone carts are not always available.
Method • Veteran inquired about possibility of converting his Permobil C500 wheelchair into motorized prone cart, which was successfully accomplished 2 wk later by multidisciplinary team of SCI medical professionals. Chair converted to motorized prone cart.
Results • Physical/occupational therapy: • Assisted with reconfiguration and verified safe transfers into chair and driving of device. • Psychology: • Verified positive psychosocial benefit. • Nursing and physician services: • Verified absence of unwanted pain or skin injury resulting from use of device.
Conclusion • Benefits experienced with this reconfiguration indicate that increased use of purpose-built motorized prone cards may be beneficial on hospital wards with high frequency of treating persons with ischial wounds.
