SustainableTourism and REcreation as an opportunity to promote Alternative Mobility Stream October 2006 – January 2009
Objectives of STREAM: • to promote sustainable mobility TO and IN recreational/tourist areas; • to use recreation as a circumstance in which you can more easily promote green mobility in every day life • Demonstration projects in 7 countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal • 3 kinds of target areas:
Backgrounds • Leisure trips generate more car traffic then home or school related trips • Mobility management for tourism and recreation is less explored • Car traffic and parking decreases the quality of recreation “If you come to enjoy a natural environment, why not use also more "natural" means to travel?” • Recreation is a good opportunity to raise awareness about sustainable mobility “If you cycle for leisure, why not try it out in everyday life?”
Objectives • Demonstrations in 7 countries and different areas • Developing, testing and promoting a wide variety of mobility solutions information services - intermodal mobility routes (bicycle in combination with boat, public transport and parking) - green tourist packages - clean vehicles - dedicated bus services • Exchanging experiences and disseminating results
Expected results 1. Creation of awareness and commitment among decision makers (tourist sector) and the general public 2. Application and testing of soft (cheap) measures for behaviour change in leisure related trips 3. Testing of new behaviour among target groups and reaching tangible energy savings 4. Increasing the environmental quality of the recreational environment 5. Best practices that can be used for international dissemination
