3. 3 Concepts to Review with Students Everyone has rights and responsibilities regarding physical safety at school.
Everyone has a right to be free from sexual harassment at school.
Everyone has a right to feel emotionally safe and to feel a sense of purpose and belonging while in school.
No one has a right to interfere with anyone elses success in any way, including jeopardizing their physical safety, sense of purpose, or sense of belonging.
4. 4 In different situations, two people may have disproportionate amounts of power. Person X = a very skilled & experience baseball player, but is just learning to play a musical instrument.
Person Y = a very skilled & experienced musician, but is just thinking about trying out for the baseball team.
5. 5 X = Baseball Player and Y = Musician If X and Y are talking and the topic of sports comes up, X is in a greater position of power because of his knowledge, confidence, ability, and experience in sports.
6. 6 Abuse of Power If power is abused, it can interfere with the emotional safety of the person with less power.
For example, being insulted about ones ability to play baseball is more likely to hurt if the insults come from someone highly knowledgeable or talented in baseball.
7. 7 Y, the musician, wants to play baseball. If X, the baseball player, wants to make Y feel bad, he/she would say things like:
Getting on the team is no sweat. ~ Bragging
I have seen you throw, and there is no way you will make it. ~ Insulting
Sure, youll not only make the team, but you will probably be the star. ~ Sarcasm
I suppose non-athletic types might be able to make the team if they work hard. ~ Patronizing
8. 8 Y, the musician, wants to play baseball. If X, the baseball player, wants to use his/her power in a positive way, he/she could say:
Hey, go for it! ~ Encouragement
Somebody as fast as you would be a great asset to the team. ~ Complimenting
If someone with my limited brainpower can learn to play, anybody can. ~ Self-depreciating
Practice is a week from now, show up and try out. ~ Sharing information
If you want, I can introduce you to the coach. ~ Offering Assistance
9. 9 Staying silent ~ the old adage . . . If you cannot say anything nice, dont say anything at all.
