Procedure. Place the patient in the supine position Clean the skin around the venipuncture site and drape the area. Sterile gloves should be worn when performing the procedure. Locate the femoral vein by palpating the femoral artery. The vein lies directly medial to the artery (from lateral to medial: nerve, artery, vein, empty space, lymph node).
