Chiropractorsarepractitionersofmanualmedicine,whichistheuseofhandstodiagnoseandtreatpatients.Althoughchiropracticdatesbacktoatleast1895,ithasonlybeeninthelastfivedecadesthatithasbecomeestablishedasaprofessionandcommonlyavailableinvariouscountriesaroundtheworld.Chiropractor'smaintreatmentinterventionsincludemanualmanipulation(adjustmentormobilization),jointormusclemanipulations,stretchingexercises,tractionprocedures,electrotherapy,exercisetherapyandothermodalities.Chiropractorsarepractitionersofmanualmedicine,whichistheuseofhandstodiagnoseandtreatpatients.Althoughchiropracticdatesbacktoatleast1895,ithasonlybeeninthelastfivedecadesthatithasbecomeestablishedasaprofessionandcommonlyavailableinvariouscountriesaroundtheworld.Chiropractor'smaintreatmentinterventionsincludemanualmanipulation(adjustmentormobilization),jointormusclemanipulations,stretchingexercises,tractionprocedures,electrotherapy,exercisetherapyandothermodalities. Despiteitsrelativelyshorttimeinexistenceasarecognizedprofession;chiropracticpresentlyprovidescareforapproximately18millionAmericansperyear.Whilechiropracticcareisnotofferedbyallphysicians,mostprimarycarephysiciansintheUnitedStatesoffersomeformofmanualtherapy,eitherasatreatmentoptionorasacomplementaryone.Chiropractorstreatapproximately181millionpeopleworldwide,notincludingtheapproximately31millionpeoplewhoseekminoradjustmentseachyearinEurope. Chiropractichasbeendescribedasa"smallbutgrowing"professionasseenfromastatisticalviewpointbecauseofanincreaseinenrollmentlevelsfrom1980to2010.TheprofessionisdefinedbytheU.S.BureauofLaborStatisticsas"amethodoftreatingthehumanframebasedonthemaintenanceandrestorationofthenormalandhealthyactionofthebody'smusculoskeletalsystemanditseffectuponotherbodysystems." Chiropractorsadjustpatientsmanually.Thisinvolvesapplyingforcethroughapatient'sbodytomanipulatethespine.Mostmanipulationismanualthrusttechnique,althoughalargenumberofothertechniquesincludingmechanicalforce,suchaspassivesofttissuemobilization(PSMT),arealsousedbysomechiropractors.Chiropractorsbelievethatthismanipulationrestoresjointmobilitybyremovinginterferencecausedbytissueadhesions,improvingbloodsupply,orincreasingnervesupplytomuscles.
