They needed money to pay for the French and Indian War and to keep British soldiers in America to defend the colonies
This was the law that placed a tax on printed materials in the colonies
1770 Boston Massacre 1766 Stamp Act repealed 1775 Fighting begins 1773 Boston Tea Party Intoler- able Acts 1765 Stamp Act passed 1774 --1st Continental Congress Formed 1768 Townshend Acts passed 1770 Townshend Acts repealed The Stamp Act (1765)
This patriot spoke out against the Stamp Act and this is the famous statement he said concerning the freedom of the colonies
Patrick Henry. He said, “Give me liberty or give me death!” He would fight for American freedom to the death. He would rather die than live under British rule!
This new law replaced the Stamp Act and this is what it taxed
1770 Boston Massacre 1766 Stamp Act repealed 1775 Fighting begins 1773 Boston Tea Party Intoler- able Acts 1765 Stamp Act passed 1774 --1st Continental Congress Formed 1768 Townshend Acts passed 1770 Townshend Acts repealed The Townshend Acts (1767) placed a tax on imported goods such as tea, paper, and woolen cloth
It angered ALL Americans, no matter what colony they were from. Before, each colony acted like a miniature country. After the taxation, the colonies began to unite as Americans
The Daughters of Liberty helped boycott (refuse to buy) imported goods because Britain put a tariff (tax) on them. They made their own “Liberty Tea” and wove their own cloth instead of buying these things from Britain. This really HURT British business and soon the Townshend Acts were repealed (canceled)
This was the last tax King George III placed on the colonists and this is what it said (2 things).
1770 Boston Massacre 1766 Stamp Act repealed 1775 Fighting begins 1773 Boston Tea Party Intoler- able Acts 1765 Stamp Act passed 1774 --1st Continental Congress Formed 1768 Townshend Acts passed 1770 Townshend Acts repealed The Tea Act (1773) placed a tax on tea and said colonists could only buy tea from one company– the struggling East India Company. Tea Act led to this!
This is how the colonists protested the tea tax and what it was called.

The Sons of Liberty dressed as Mohawk Indians, boarded the ship at night, and dumped all the tea into the harbor. This was known as the Boston Tea Party. (1773)
This was the punishment King George III dealt out to the colonists for the Boston Tea Party (tell what the colonists called it and what it did)
1770 Boston Massacre 1766 Stamp Act repealed 1775 Fighting begins 1773 Boston Tea Party Intoler- able Acts 1765 Stamp Act passed 1774 --1st Continental Congress Formed 1768 Townshend Acts passed 1770 Townshend Acts repealed The Intolerable Acts closed Boston Harbor so they couldn’t trade, sent soldiers to Boston and made the colonists feed and house them, put Boston under the command of a British general… until the colonists agreed to pay for the ruined tea
This organization was started to spread news throughout the colonies
This is the main way the different colonies got messages to other colonies
This Express Rider was the most famous one for spreading news about the British attack headed towards Lexington, MA
This is how the Committees of Correspondence and Minutemen were alike
They served the common goal to help the colonists resist British control. They both helped colonists take immediate action if problems arose with the British.

They voted on what actions to take against the British until the Intolerable Acts were repealed.
These were the two main goals of Britain in the taxing of the colonies
To pay for the French and Indian War and the soldiers to stay to protect the colonists AND also to show the colonists that they were in charge and had the right to tax the colonists
This is evidence that the British did NOT expect the colonists to unite against them
They kept trying to tax the colonists! They expected it would show them Britain was in control.
What was the single thing the British did to cause the American Revolution for Independence?
They taxed the colonists without allowing them representation in Parliament
This is the series of events that link the Boston Massacre to the Boston Tea Party
1770 Boston Massacre 1766 Stamp Act repealed 1775 Fighting begins 1773 Boston Tea Party Intoler- able Acts 1765 Stamp Act passed 1774 --1st Continental Congress Formed 1768 Townshend Acts passed 1770 Townshend Acts repealed Tensions were high in the colonies because of the British-imposed taxes. British soldiers panicked during a protest and shot 5 colonists (freeman Crispus Attucks was the first killed): The Boston Massacre. Then the British repealed all taxes except for the Tea Tax to show them who was boss. The colonists protested, threw tea off British ships into Boston Harbor, causing the Boston Tea Party
This is the meaning of “No Taxation Without Representation!” and why this saying meant a lot to the colonists
The colonists were being taxed by Britain. They had been self-governed for years; they did not vote in Britain and therefore had no representation there. The colonists believed the British had no right to tax them since they did not vote on it.
This is the series of events from the first shot of the Revolutionary War until Bunker Hill
British heard colonists were stock-piling weapons in Concord, MA., so they headed out from Boston to seize them. Paul Revere rode to warn Lexington (a town along the way) that the British were coming. The Lexington Militia formed, but lost the Battle to the British. They British moved on towards Concord, but since the people had been warned, they were ready. The women had hidden the weapons around town as the men prepared to fight. When the British got there, they were outnumbered and suffered great losses on their retreat back to Boston Click slide again to see map!
This colonist lead the battle of Bunker Hill. This was the result of the battle
William Prescott. They battle was actually fought on Breed’s Hill in an attempt to take Boston back from the British (high ground!). The British won, but suffered the loss of HALF their men!
