Currently half of the the 200 students are of Indigenous background. • Perception of learning • Within the school community there are a wide range of expectations and values regarding learning. • Diversity • Students, Teachers , Parents bring a wide range of experiences, backgrounds and knowledge. Jodie Using the Anne Morrice Literacy Cycle with R - Yr 1. I have used Anne's approach in Literacy Block. It is aboutbuildingstudent's vocabulary and providing them with everything they need to be able to write successfully. The kids do all the work , write out all the words they will use, discuss the sounds that are in words. There is a great deal of modelling by the teacher and SSOs. I have used Big Books and other resources. Because we use the same book for a week or more the students look for them so that they can "read" them . They were not interested before. The repetition helps them remember the story. FLINDERS VIEW PRIMARY SCHOOL
Jodie I have noticed that some students now write in lines and are beginning to make a sentence rather than just a jumble of words. More students are having a go at writing and finding words that they can use. They ask questions about words "Is this....?" Because they are immersed in the language that is around them most students end up with something on the page. They all work at their own level and some students can easily be extended. Edie Working towards “Student Directed Learning”. This is my first year of teaching in my own classroom although I have had many other “life experiences”. Aim:Develop routines and work towards student centred learning. I have clear expectations that students don’t interrupt the learning of others. Do: The students run all the morning routines and Literacy Block routines. If students muck up or waste time then they make up work in their own time. Reflect:I need to be organised. It is only now that I am becoming comfortable. Now the routines are in place we can make greater choices in the learning topics we want to do. Students have shown an interest in studying Volcanoes. Georgie Curriculum Support My job at FVPS is to support teachers to deliver the curriculum. In particular I have focused on SACSA , ICT and Learning to Learn. At FVPS We recognize that learning about computers is an area that interests a majority of students. Over the last few years we have built our computer resources and students have been quick to develop skills in a range of programs. Teachers can make the most of student knowledge by recognizing we are all teachers and learners together and working in partnership to reach our goals. FLINDERS VIEW PRIMARY SCHOOL
I have ……….. • worked with teachers and students to develop skills in ICT and multi media. • used a constructivist approach, building on the skills and interests of both students and teachers. • encouraged students to celebrate their skills and knowledge through a variety of presentations and “real life” enterprising activities. Georgie FLINDERS VIEW PRIMARY SCHOOL
My teaching plan has been developed from the Julia Atkin model that looks at core beliefs and values. Georgie FLINDERS VIEW PRIMARY SCHOOL
Computer Tutors • Students apply to be part of the group. • Students choose the skills they want to develop. • Students share their knowledge with others. Georgie FLINDERS VIEW PRIMARY SCHOOL
Students thoughts on teaching and learning following “ BACK TO SCHOOL” in adult learners week. “ I felt special. It was a change for us.” “ We asked them what they wanted to learn about.” “They asked questions. You learn by asking questions. You learn in different ways.” The best thing about it was helping someone else to use the computer and get their own E mails. They felt a bit “put down” because we were the teachers and they were the students . I talked about things to make them feel at home. Georgie FLINDERS VIEW PRIMARY SCHOOL
“ It was fun because you were helping people to learn. They wanted to know the basics , how to make web pages. I had the knowledge and the HTML book so I felt confident. I would do it all over again. It helped me to remember things.” “Most people didn’t know how to type so I showed them how to go into the typing program.” “She listened and cooperated.” “I taught how to use the internet, to block, delete and compose in Hot Mail. She caught on pretty well too.” Georgie FLINDERS VIEW PRIMARY SCHOOL
To support the school focus on communication a group of Year 4/5 students made a documentary about acceptable ways to communicate with each other in school and in the community. Students were engaged in the process, devising questions, planning interviews, inviting people to the launch, promoting the product. Georgie FLINDERS VIEW PRIMARY SCHOOL
