  3. Surrey Profile Older people form the largest countywide care group and engage the highest proportion of resources in adult care. The current population of Surrey is estimated to be 1,045,500 with 16.5% of the total aged 65 and over (nationally 15.5% are over 65). Of these 50% are estimated to be aged 75 and over (nationally 47.5% are over 75) and 16.5% are estimated to be aged 85 and over (nationally 12.5% are over 85). The picture in Surrey is therefore a slightly higher than average population of older people. Of the population aged 65 and over (203,000 approx), 25% (50,000 approx) live in private households with limiting long term illness, 16% (31,500 approx) need significant assistance with daily living tasks and 3% (6,000 approx) live at home in high need.
