Global Ograpaphy With 30” USGS TOPO Jordan Alpert NOAA/NWS/EMC jordan.alpert@noaa.gov20070830 EMC brjiefing mtnlm7_briefing_30aug
USGS 30” Topography GFS Operations • Mountain elevation, sea-land mask, mtnvar_14 file for Gravity wave drag and Mountain Blocking. • USGS 30” interpolated to 8’ (S-Y.). • Navy 10’ used for lakes and Antarctic • Spectral filter applied. • 8’ radar sat GICE.
USGS Topography New 30” • GFS Gaussian grid directly interpolated from 30” to all GFS grids (next slide). • 30” radar sat GICE (Grumbine) • Lakes from 30” UMD (regional, Gayno) but 8’ can still be used. • Spectral filter can be applied or not.

Higher peaks in 30” cause new mtns to be higher than 8’ . Yellow > Green

Interpolating from 30” directly fixes problem in Kim’s GWD OA Asymmetry parameter.
Runs • Fanglin ran t126 from IC, forecast only. • July 1-22. • Score is close but worse and one drop out. • The difference could be because higher resolution makes higher peaks available that are not smoothed in 8’. • Then with lower surface pressure, days (skin T) should be hotter and nights colder. • If model is already warm at surface then new mountains will make it worse and warmer surfaces could have irreversible effects with convection/cloud/radiation.

Summary • New Orography based on 30” with 30” lake/sea-land mask, GICE, and mtnvar_14 GWD and Mtn Blocking fixed fields. • Need to run with cycling for high and low resolution to see if cycling analysis adjusts. • Testing continues at T126. • Other changes to GWD/Mtn Blocking done.
