Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science (MIF): • more than 2700 students • about 120 professors, lecturers, assistants • 10 departments (research and studies) • bachelour, master and doctoral programs • covering: • computer science, software engineering • mathematics, applications, teaching of mathematics and computer science • statistics, econometrics, finance and insurance mathematics

  7. VU MIF ITC: • over1200 sq.m,two storeys • over170 computers, 15 computer classes • computer network is a heterogeneous one, consisting of PCs, SunBlade workstations, SunRay systems • operating platforms: Unix (Solaris), Linux, Windows

  9. Two clusters on Solaris platform: Hardware: • 19 workstations SunBlade100 UltraSparcIIe • server SunFire280R UltraSparcIIICu • 4 servers V210 (8 CPUs), running simultaneously 2 SunRay computing systems with 15 + 20 terminals

  10. Two clusters on Solaris platform: Cluster software: • clusters are operated bySun HPC ClusterTools • MPI interface, • scalable scientific library S3L, • graphical debugging tool Prism, • the software is installed in /opt/SUNWhpc directories of cluster nodes

  11. Cluster on Linuxplatform: Cluster software: • LAM operational environment for running cluster • MPI programming interface • PVM operational interface • possibility to allocate for computation up to 60 Linux-based computers (basic grid consist of 24 computers)

Problems and applications in CHEMISTRY Institute of Chemistry • Computational chemistry methods are applied for: • Modeling of organic and bioorganic molecules and metal clusters • Simulation of organic reactions • Modeling of the SAM (self-assembled mono layers) on metal surfaces For calculation GAUSSIAN, GAMESS and MOPAC programs are used.

  30. Problems and applications in EDUCATION Kaunas University of Technology Since 2002 Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) is a partner in two EU IST Grid Projects. KTU as a partner aims to integrate into EU Grid Learning space and to achieve two main goals: • Using Grid technologies to establish Virtual Learning Organizations including science and academic institutions. • E-Science Grid resources have to be used for advanced studies (especially by MSc and PhD students) at higher education institutions.
