Mentos Geyser Experiment Science Mentos Geyser October 2009
Question/Purpose • I want to create a chemical reaction using soda and mentos. Will frozen mentos or room temperature mentos create a higher geyser?
Independent VariableThe independent variable is the variable that you can change. For example: • Temperature of the Mentos • Temperature of soda • Type of soda (diet vs. reg) In this experiment, our independent variable will be the temperature of the Mentos.
Dependent VariableThe dependent variable is the variable that you can measure. In this experiment our dependent variable will be the height of the geyser
Controlled VariableThe controlled variable is the variable that you can keep the same. For example: • Same number of Mentos • Same size soda and same brand • Two sodas with same temperature In this experiments our main control will the same brand of soda – Coco Cola
Controlled Variable • There will be other controls such as same tape measure, same size bottles (2ltr), same location, same number of mentos, etc.
Hypothesis If …, then… statement! • Example: If we create a Mentos Geyser using cold Mentos and room temperature Mentos, then the room temperature Mentos will form the higher geyser.
Hypothesis If …, then… statement! If we create a Mentos Geyser using room temperature and frozen mentos, then ___________will form the higher geyser.
Research • The Mentos geyser is created by physical change. Water molecules in soda are attracted to each other and hold gas trapped in soda. But when the Mentos are added to soda, they change the surface tension among water molecules and create the conditions for carbon dioxide to escape. The gum coating and pores in the Mentos allows the carbon dioxide to form bubbles and escape.
Materials • 10 Mentos • 4 2 liter sodas • Paper Clip or String • Safety Goggles • Apron • Measuring Tape
Procedures • Gather your materials. • Put on your safety goggles and apron. • Bore holes in 10 Mentos candies. • String 5 frozen Mentos and 5 room temperature each on two wires or string. • Drop the first group of Mentos in a soda. • Measure the height of the geyser. • Repeat the steps with the other group of Mentos.
Data Collection • Create a table to report data
Results / Analysis • Which Mentos geyser went higher? Create a bar graph to show your results. (DRY MIX)

Conclusion • Was your hypothesis correct or incorrect? • How would you change the experiment the next time you do it?
Variables for your class! • What was the independent variable? • What was the dependent variable? • What were the controlled variables?
