Ann Arbor, MI - According to the Surgeon General of the United States, radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer next to smoking. Michigan has radon levels that are much higher than the national average which is why testing for this dangerous gas is all the more important if you live in Michigan. Some of the known radon "hot spots" are located in Washtenaw, Livingston, Oakland County, Wayne, Monroe, Lenawee, Macomb, Hillsdale, and Jackson Counties. Keep in mind, that radon problems are not exclusive to these areas. All homes should be tested regardless of location or type of construction. "You cannot see, smell, or taste radon gas so the only way to know if a home has a radon problem is to conduct a test" according to Jamey Gelina, a certified radon specialist with Air Quality Control, Michigan's largest radon mitigation agency.
