2. Who Manufactures the Food? The AAFCO is a non-profit organization and their main aim is to ensure that all pet food sold in America, adheres to a certain number of acceptable standards. However, with pet food being recalled in some instances, one can only acknowledge this as an indication that their existence is not a flawless guarantee that pet foods are exempt of any form of contamination. Therefore, the responsibility rests with you to ensure that you know who the Manufacturer of your pet food is.

3. Where is the Food Produced? Once you have educated yourself on who the Manufacturer is, it is also important to know where the food is produced. Although one may think that the Manufacturer is locally based, the Manufacturer may in actual fact outsource the labour to countries such as China, who is well known for allowing contaminants to slip through the cracks, even with products which are meant for human consumption.

4. What Resources are Used to Produce it? Just as important as the two aforementioned points are, it is also important to know what resources are used to manufacture your pet’s food. We need to be educated in the processes used to get the food from the time they start manufacturing, up to the point when the food reaches your local store. The use of by-products in commercial food is of major concern, as many foods contain either lamb or chicken meal, which is added to the food in powder form and allows for a high “protein” content.

5. However, the means by which they arrive at the “powder form” lamb or chicken meal, will leave many cringing. They use a method called “rendering”, which is mainly a melting process. The carcasses of slaughtered or deceased animals are placed into huge vats and are grinded and cooked for several hours, converting it to “usable material”. This method removes water, kills viruses, parasites, bacteria and various other infectious entities. It also separates the fat, which then becomes animal fat. This is the fat found in pet foods.

6. They use the remainder of the dried protein solids to then manufacture the lamb or chicken meal, which is one of the by-products added to pet food. This is a very cheap manufacturing method, as it reduces the manufacturing costs and allows for the high “protein” content in the food. The disadvantage to the consumer (and our pets), in this manufacturing process is the huge loss of quality in pet food and there is no guarantee that absolutely all toxic substances and/or entities have been eliminated completely.

7. What Does the Food Contain? Following from the above, it is important to know what your pet’s food contains, as although the label may state that the food contains nutrients, it may contain way too many. We all know the saying that “too much of a good thing is also not good” and this also applies to our pets, as too many nutrients in their food also pose their own set of ailments and disadvantages. Another ingredient to be wary of is the preservatives used in pet food, as well as any other possible toxic, harmful ingredients. The best possible food you could add to your pet’s diet, would be fresh, organic, non-processed food, such as the food we manufacture at PetsWell Pantry.

9. Monitor Your Pet’s Behavior Get to know your pet well and monitor his or her behavior and also look out for signs which may indicate any deterioration in his or her health. On the contrary to what many people believe, a wet nose is not necessarily a sign of a healthy pet. The first and most important sign of deteriorating health is when a dog refuses to eat. This is when you need to pay extra attention and have your pet examined by your local Veterinarian.
