A Tale of American Water Crisis – Brian Marshall America has always been a thriving hub of prosperity and dreams. But one thing that remains a grave threat or a problem plaguing American soil is a dangerous reality. Water in our country is not disposed of properly and judiciously is a cause of worry. Rainwater harvesting and water conservation are predominantly Indian concepts. And America despite having the latest technological, ingenuity and know how have somehow failed at every turn to replicate water conservation. We require innovative and efficacious ways. Every drop counts. Granted that we have seen the advent of machines. I will delve into statistics and empirical data in key states in the US. Let us first understand the concept. America is home to a revolutionized arena of game changing and bold implementations. With changes in water consumption patterns and fluctuating human necessities. This should be the status quo. Let us take isolated cases and incidents across some states and hamlets in the US and do a blow-by-blow. There are various means by which one can conserve this essential commodity bestowed upon us. By turning off faucets inundated with water. Or by also using that leftover water for food purposes such as boiling or watering your plants etc. This will in turn conversely aid in sustainable development. A non-
renewable, exhaustible resource has been used effectively to reduce energy expenditure. A practical model that is feasible, viable and doable is the need of the hour. Will Case Studies Really Help? A Closer Look There was a movement raised to create awareness regarding the hazardous effects of wasting water. Boston successfully managed to salvage the needed water by reducing consumption. And that too by the 1980’s peak from a whopping 125.5 billion gallons. The reduction was of a drastically efficacious rate of 70.9 billion gallons in 2009, with a 43% reduction to be exact. The city also in turn saved a lot of surplus cash by implementing modern techniques to save water. They spent 40$ million dollars but avoided up to 500$ million dollars in costs. All they did was choose veritable alternatives to do so by simply reducing their demand instead of increasing supplies. This was done by utilizing quite simple yet credible techniques. They are such as repairing leaks, requiring low-flow toilets. In public domain such as new construction, and retrofitting homes with efficient and fully pliable plumbing fixtures. How Exactly Does Water Conservation Work: Decoded? According to widespread data, the sleepy little hamlet of Tucson residing in Arizona has considerably improved their residential water usage in the past 18
years or so from a cumulative denomination of 121 gallons per capita per day in 1996 to a very impressive figure of 86. This is a reduction of 35 GPCD or 28.9% in a span of over 18 years. With their proactive nature in curbing excessive water losses. They have devised rather meaningful and highly impactful coping strategies. Thereby offering a wide range of rebates and other incentives to prospective residents and commercial buyers and customers. The same methods were followed rather elegantly in Denver, Colorado, and Santa Barbara in California.
