CONSERVATION OF WILD LIFE. INTRODUCTION. WILDLIFE refers to all non-cultivated and non-domesticated life . However,some of the species are threatened with problem of extinction. REASON FOR EXTINCTION. 1)Habitat destruction. 2)Hunting and collection. 3)Pollution.

1)HABITAT DESTRUCTION PROBLEM 1)Human exploit many natural habitats, destroying them in the process , e.g.Timbering destroys forests and endangers species like the orang-utan. Clearing of river banks destroys the natural habitat of the otter species every year.
2) Deforestation : Destruction of the forest leads to extinction of numerous species. It is estimated that deforestation of tropical rain forests has led to extinction of 6000 species every year .
2)Hunting And Collection Problem 1)Human hunt tigers for sport, crocodiles for their skins ,oryx as trophies, elephants for ivory, whales for oil and rhinoceros for their horn.
2)Hunting And Collection Problem 2)Some for the pet trade (e.g. tamarinds and parrots) and for research purpose,e.g. frogs. These are in addition to the numerous species hunted for food .
3) Pollution Problem Oil pollution threatens some rare species of sea birds. The build-up of certain insecticides along food chains endangers predatory birds like the peregrine falcon and the golden eagle.
4)Competition from humans and animals • Where a species is restricted to a small area , e.g.. the giant tortoises in the Galapagos Islands , they are often unable to compete with the influx of man and animals .Because their habitat is restricted , they cannot escape.
5) Natural selection Problem It is, and always has been, part of the normal process of evolution that organisms which are genetically better adapted replace ones less well adapted.

1) Development of national parks and natural reserves These are habitats legally safeguarded. They may preserve a vulnerable food source . In China areas of bamboo forest are protected to help conserve the panda. In Africa game parks help to conserve endangered species such as African elephant.
2) Legal protection for endangered species • It is illegal to collect or kill certain species , e.g. the koala in Australia. In Britain, the Wildlife and Countryside Act gives legal protection to many wildlife.
3) Breeding in zoos and botanical gardens • Endangered species may be bred in the protected environment of a zoo. When numbers have been sufficiently increased they may be reintroduced into the wild .
4) Removal of animals from threatened areas • Organisms in habitats threatened by humans , or by natural disasters such as floods may be removed and resettled in more secure habitats.
5)Pollution control • Measures to control pollution such as smoke emissions, oil spillage, overuse of pesticides, fertilizer run-off , etc. , all help to prevent habitat and species destruction.
6) Recycling • The more material which is recycled, the less need there is to obtain that material from natural sources. These activities often destroy sensitive habitats directly or indirectly through the dumping of waste which is toxic or the development of roads to transport the product.
7) Education • It is of paramount importance to educate people in ways of preventing habitat destruction and encouraging the conservation of organisms.
