  1. Find Your Balance Between Food & Physical Activity A look at MyPyramid Physical Activity Recommendations Julie Garden-Robinson, Food and Nutrition Specialist Bridget Curley, Program Assistant

  2. Be Active! • MyPyramid is specific for each person • Recommendations: • Be physically active for at least 30 minutes on most days of the week • Be active at a moderate or vigorous level

  3. Why Physical Activity? • Physical activity is “movement of the body that uses energy” (calories) • Calories are used up through activity • The more time and intensity of the activity, the more calories are burned

  4. Moderate vs. Vigorous • Moderate intensity: gardening, dancing, hiking or light weight training • Vigorous intensity: aerobics, swimming freestyle laps, chopping wood or running 5mph or faster • Activities of lower intensity that do not raise heart rate are not counted toward daily physical activity

  5. Kids Need Activity Too! • Children and teenagers also need physical activity • Recommendation: at least 60 minutes every day

  6. Make activity part of your day! • Park far away and walk to offices or stores • Replace coffee breaks at work with short walks • Mow the lawn with a push mower • Wash the car by hand • Play with the kids and pets outside

  7. Start a Routine • Join a walking group • Participate on an office or community softball or bowling team • Take part in community recreation center activities • Take yoga, golf or karate lessons

  8. It’s Easy! • Find activities you already enjoy • Schedule time for activity • Try fun activities with family members or groups
