Majors and Emphases • There are nine distinct majors in CBS • Some of the subject areas are available as only emphases or only individual majors, while others may be offered as both emphases and individual majors
CBS Majors • Cell Biology • Exercise Biology • Evolution, Ecology and Biodiversity • Plant Biology • Genetics • Biochemistry and Molecular Biology • Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior • Microbiology
CBS Majors • Biological Sciences (requires ONE area of emphasis) • Evolution and Ecology • Plant Biology • Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior • Microbiology • Marine Biology • Molecular and Cellular Biology
Majors are offered as a Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) and/or a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) depending on the major
UCD requirements • Need min. 180 units • 2.0 GPA in major classes & overall • Entry Level Writing (Subject A) • American History and Institution (usually completed in high school) • General Education (GEs) • Residence Requirement
College of Biological Sciences • 105-115 units per major • English Composition Requirement • Pass/No Pass Options • 2.0 in major/depth matter classes
BIS 105 • Title: Biomolecules and Metabolism • Fundamentals of biochemical processes, with emphasis on protein structure and activity; energy metabolism; catabolism of sugars, amino acids, and lipids; and gluconeogenesis.
Course Details • 3-units • Lectures: 3 hrs/wk (no discussion) • 20 class periods • 18 lectures/ 2 midterms + final • Grading Mode: Letter • Effective: Spring 2008 • Next offered: Winter 2009
Pre-requisites • General Biology • BIS 1ABC or BIS 2ABC • Gene and Gene Expression • BIS 101 • Organic Chemistry • CHE 8B or CHE 118B or CHE 128B
Credit Limitations • After BIS 102- 1 unit • After BIS 103- 1 unit • After BIS 102 & 103- no credit

Depth Matter Units • Upper division units for each major • Ex. Biological Sciences = 45 units (includes common curriculum (BIS 100s) + field requirements (A-E) + Emphasis classes)

BIS 105 vs BIS 102/103 • Less acid-base chemistry • Less mathematical proofs • More abbreviated enzyme kinetics • Discussion of major pathways • Ex. Respiration, TCA cycle, and Glycolysis
