India considered to be the land of culture and birthplace for one of the most spectacular and ancient forms of art that is Pichwai or ‘pichvai’. The roots for Pichwai paintings are in Nathdwara region of Rajasthan. The Pichwai paintings are a 400-year-old art form which honors the beautiful life of Lord Krishna. These paintings were originated as wall hangings behind the main deity in Krishna temples of Nathdwara district in Rajasthan. The Pichwai paintings of Rajasthan was a forgotten art until devotees of Vallabhacharya noticed them. Vallabhacharya created 24 iconic poses of Lord Krishna which brought this unique art into prominence. Every Pichwai painting depicts different festivals in Hindu culture and glorious life of Lord Krishna. This word Pichwai comes from Sanskrit, ‘pich’ meaning back and ‘wais’ meaning hanging. As it states these Indian traditional paintings are draped behind the idol of Shrinathji. In the region of Nathdwara, Pichhwai paintings are not only a mere art form but it has become the main export for its people and are in much demand among foreign visitors. Places like Chitron ki gali (Street of paintings) and Chitrakaron ka mohallah (colony of painters) is where artisit of these unique paintings can be found which makes them a make a close community with constant interaction. Making of Pichwai pantings are often considered laborious, due to which many skillfull painters work under a master artist.

  2. Making of Pichwai painting takes a complex process which requires experience, months of time and immense skills. This is a sacred art form is dedicated to the god and learning the art of Pichwai paintings is out of question as these paintings are an example of ‘Guru-shishya’ tradition; which means the art is passed down through the generations. The Pichwai paintings are one of the most tough art forms when we talk about Indian traditional paintings. Pichwai paintings are mainly focused on Lord Shrinathji who is considered as an evidence of 7-year-old child form of Lord Krishna. Everyone is known to the story of when Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan parvat on his little finger to safeguard the people of Vrindavan from the devastating thunderstorm attack of Lord Krishna. Pichwai paintings depict the events and seasons in the life of lord Krishna. The radiant pink colour is used to show summer, whereas to illustrate the rainy season, pictures of peacock is manifested. Unlike other art forms, the touch up of Pichwai paintings of Rajasthan is impossible due to its fine detailing. Natural colours are made using coal, gold, silver, indigo, zinc and saffron which are used in these Indian traditional paintings. Combination of natural and acrylic colours is used to give an atheistic touch to the paintings with its commercialization in export market.

  3. A good Pichwai painting takes approximately about 8-10 months to finish and cost about 30,000 to 90,000 for home décor. The evolution of Pichwai paintings has been steady in the eyes of painting lovers. But, people have accepted these paintings with open hands as change in mind-sets and love of art has grown. They are cherished among art lovers and collectors as they are an immense source of beauty and is believed to bring positivity into your home.
