  1. Hungary Threatens to Reimpose Import Ban on Agricultural Products Hungary Threatens to Reimpose Import Ban on Agricultural Products from Ukraine from Ukraine Hungary's government has confirmed its intention to reimpose a ban on agricultural products from Ukraine starting September 16 if the EU doesn't extend the ban on the domestic sale of Ukrainian grain. "Hungary will ask the EU to extend the ban from September 16," Gergely Gulyas said, adding Hungary is ready to put an import ban if the EU doesn’t extend its ban on agricultural products from Ukraine. The logic behind this move is to safeguard Hungary's domestic market, which has faced numerous challenges in recent years. These challenges include the COVID pandemic, the impact of the neighboring war, energy crises, and the influx of low-cost Ukrainian agricultural products into the European market without customs duties. “Despite expectations of a strong corn harvest this year, the presence of competitively priced Ukrainian products has complicated sales”, Hungarian Farmer added. Impact on other EU members Impact on other EU members In May, the EU granted authorization to Bulgaria, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Hungary to ban the domestic sales of Ukrainian wheat, maize, rapeseed, and sunflower seeds, while allowing transit for export to other countries. This ban is scheduled to conclude on September 15.

  2. Ukraine maintains its stance that the EU should lift unilateral restrictions on Ukrainian exports and advocates for an agreement with Poland. In contrast, Poland has expressed its intent to maintain the ban, even if the EU doesn't agree to an extension. Hungary's willingness to take a similar step supports Poland's position. Additionally, on August 25, the Polish Minister of Agriculture, Robert Telus, announced that five EU countries had united to request an extension of the import ban on grain from Ukraine.
