Indian Sugar Exports At 16.92 Lakh Tonnes Till Jan 4 In The 2022-23 Sugar Season, Over 59K Tonnes Exported To China Situated in Asia, India is the largest sugar producer in the world and ranks behind Brazil in terms of sugar exports. The sugar marketing year in India runs from October to September. The Government of India (GOI) has allowed for the export of 6 million metric tonnes (MMT) till May during the 2022-23 marketing year. The All India Sugar Trade Association (AISTA) made its initial sugar output projection at 35.8MMT for the 2022-23 marketing year which is lower than the previous year’s record sugar output i.e. 36.5MMT. As per the association, an additional 5MMT of India’s sugar production would be diverted toward ethanol production. Indian Sugar Exports During the 2021-22 marketing year, India’s Sugar Exports stood at 11.2MMT. AISTA said on 10th January’23 that India has exported 16.92 lakh tonnes of sugar till 4th January’23 of the ongoing 2022-23 marketing year which includes 59,596 tonnes of sweetener to its neighbor, China.

AISTA also said that India also exported sugar to its neighboring nations including 1.47 lakh tonnes to Bangladesh, and 82,462 tonnes to Sri Lanka between October- January 4th of the current marketing year. As per AISTA, Indian mills exported an exact quantity of 1,692,751 tonnes of sugar between October- 4th January of the year. It said that over 3.47 lakh tonnes of sugar are still under loading while 2.54 lakh tonnes of sugar have been delivered to refineries and have been deemed exports in the said period. Of the exported quantities so far, the maximum exports were made to Somalia at 1.70 lakh tonnes, followed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at 1.69 lakh tonnes, Djibouti at 1.50 lakh tonnes, and Sudan at 1.37 lakh tonnes. Besides these exports, India also exported sugar to Malaysia (1.36 lakh tonnes), Indonesia (1.18 lakh tonnes), and Saudi Arabia (1.08 lakh tonnes) till 4th January’23.
