  3. How to Prepare for Surgery On the morning of surgery, shower and brush your teeth. This will assist you in feeling refreshed as well as minimize the chance of infection.

  4. How to Prepare for Surgery DO NOT EAT OR DRINK anything after midnight (including water, mints, or chewing gum) before your surgery. Undigested food in the stomach can cause complications and your surgery will be postponed if you forget.

  5. How to Prepare for Surgery Medications: Your doctor will let you know if there are certain medications you must stop prior to your surgery.

  6. How to Prepare for Surgery What to wear: Dress appropriately. People also prefer to wear loose fitting clothing that can be easily changed.

  8. How to Prepare for Surgery Leave at home: Jewelry, contact lenses and other valuables. You may leave your wedding rings on.

  14. Making going home safer You and your family member will be given discharge instructions regarding diet, activity, treatments necessary at home, and any supplies and prescriptions ordered by your physician.
