Blog: PrimedeQ Know the Different Types of Mechanical Ventilation A mechanical ventilator becomes necessary when a medical condition prevents a person from breathing on their own. Through mechanical ventilation, airflow can be delivered into the lungs to enable the patient to breathe. There are different kinds of ventilators available, including a new/refurbished machine and equipment that went through professional repair. Ventilators provide either non-invasive or invasive ventilation. When a ventilator provides invasive ventilation, a tube needs to be inserted into the airway of the patient who will be placed under intensive care. Intubation is performed by medical professionals. Non-invasive equipment is mostly used for respiratory difficulties and may be used at home. Mechanical ventilation is a component of supportive treatment for many respiratory issues and patients with severe lung symptoms. The first ventilator machine was used in 1929, and today, there are two major types of ventilators available as new/refurbished equipment: positive- pressure ventilation to push the air into the lungs, and negative-pressure ventilation to make the chest contract and expand by sucking air into the lungs. Negative-pressure ventilation The earliest mechanical ventilation was delivered by negative-pressure ventilators like the iron lung, which is a big metal cylinder that covers the patient fully up to their neck. The chest cuirass is another type of equipment that is essentially a small shell strapped to the chest to apply negative pressure. Positive-pressure ventilation The positive-pressure ventilator was initially introduced in the early 1950s for polio patients affected by respiratory paralysis. It blows air into the lungs using a tube, and it may be non-invasive or invasive. Invasive ventilation is either endotracheal intubation where the tube is inserted into the trachea through the nose or the mouth, or tracheostomy where a tube is inserted through the hole made into the patient’s airway. A non-invasive ventilation machine comes with masks and is categorized into three types:
Blog: PrimedeQ •CPAP – Continuous positive airway pressure delivers steady and constant air pressure •BiPAP – Bilevel positive airway pressure delivers the air with different pressures for exhaling and inhaling •APAP – Auto titrating (adjustable) positive airway pressure changes the air pressure according to the user’s breathing pattern You can find a wide array of mechanical ventilators online. Make sure you are buying from a reputable store that carries authentic new/refurbished products.
