  2. Introduction The 4 stages of cognitive development were first proposed by Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget in the mid-20th century. These stages are based on Piaget's observation of children's cognitive abilities and how they change as they grow and mature. 4 stages of Cognitive Development Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development

  3. Sensorimotor Stage (0-2 years) In this stage, infants explore the world through their senses and actions. They develop object permanence, the understanding that objects exist even when they can't be seen. They also begin to coordinate their movements to achieve their goals. 4 stages of Cognitive Development Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development

  4. Preoperational Stage (2-7 years) During this stage, children begin to use symbols, such as words and images, to represent objects and events in their minds. They also engage in pretend play and start to understand the perspectives of others. However, they are still unable to perform logical operations or understand abstract concepts. 4 stages of Cognitive Development Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development

  5. Concrete Operational Stage (7-11 years) In this stage, children develop the ability to perform logical operations on concrete objects and events. They also begin to understand principles of conservation, such as the fact that the amount of a substance remains the same even if its appearance changes. 4 stages of Cognitive Development Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development

  6. Formal Operational Stage (11+ years) At this stage, adolescents and adults develop the ability to think abstractly and hypothetically. They can consider multiple perspectives and systematically solve problems using logical reasoning. Overall, Piaget's stages of cognitive developmenthighlight the importance of children's active engagement in their own learning and the gradual development of increasingly complex cognitive abilities as they grow and mature.
