Choir • The Vienna Boys' choir is the modern-day descendant of the boys' choirs of the Viennese Court • It was established on 7 July 1498 by a letter • A singing master, 2 basses and 6 boys were employed • Role of the choir (consists of fourteen and twenty): To provide musical accompaniment to the church mass • The boys received a solid musical education, and many went on to become professional musicians

  12. History a style of cuisine native to Austria and composed of influences from throughout the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. Regional cuisines from Italy, Hungary and the Balkans have had an effect on Austrian cooking, and in turn this fusion of styles was influential throughout the Empire. Austrian cuisine is most often associated with Viennese cuisine, but there are significant regional variations.

  13. Austrian Staple Food Almost every village has its own bakery, offering a large choice of freshly baked sweet and savoury rolls daily from 6am. Rye bread (Vollkornbrot, Bauernbrot) is the traditional staple food among peasants. There is also the common white bread roll (Semmel) which does not have such a heavy taste.

  14. Famous food Wiener Schnitzel Knödel Austrian food is distinctive and delicious, and is traditionally of the stodgy, hearty "meat and dumplings" variety. Wiener Schnitzel (a bread-crumbed and fried veal escalope) is something of a national dish Knödel are a kind of dumpling which can be made either sweet or savory according to taste.

  15. Food Apfelstrudel. Germknoedel Austria is renowned for its pastries and desserts, the most well-known of which is probably the Apfelstrudel. Some Austrians have a habit of eating sweet flour-based dishes (Mehlspeise) for a main course once a week. Varieties include Kaiserschmarren, Marillenknoedel, and Germknoedel.

  20. Hiking • Austria is a place perfect for skiing and other winter activities • One of the most popular activities in the country is hiking • High summits of Tyrol and Salzkammergut are ideal for fit tourists keen on hiking and climbing

Swimming & Watersports • Austria doesn’t have a seaside • But the country has an enormous number of crystal clear lakes and rivers • In summer, the temperature of the water exceeds 28°C • In the lakes and rivers, people can enjoy not only swimming, but other water sports like sailing, windsurfing and rafting

Golf • Austria has established itself as having some of the best golfing in Europe. • It has more than 140 golf courses situated across the country • Most are close to mountain resorts or big cities • The new Murau-Kreischberg golf course shows of how golf can be used to make the season in the Alps last a whole year

Katherine Jessie Jean Allen, born 25 April 1970, Australia An Australia-Austrian triathlete • Achievement: Won the gold medal in the women's triathlon at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens • Received Austrian citizenship in 2002 and started racing in the World Cup • Just eight years after beginning the sport, she won the 2004 Olympic triathlon in Athens. • At the 2008 Summer Olympics, she ranked 14th

  25. Felix Gottwald, born January 13, 1976 Austria Austrian Nordic combined athlete who competed from 1994 to 2007. He made his Olympic debut as an 18 year old in : 15 km individual event at the 1994 Winter Olympics 4 x 5 km team and 15 km individual events at the 1998 Winter Olympics Achievements: Won bronze medals in the 7.5 km sprint, 15 km individual and 4 x 5 km team Nordic combined events at the 2002 Winter Olympics Won golds in the 7.5 km sprint and 4 x 5 km team competitions Took silver in the 15 km individual.

Christoph Sieber • An Austrian sailor who competed in the 2000 Summer Olympics. • Won a gold medal in the Mistral class sailing • He began early in the sporting world, started windsurfing when he was very young, and made a professional career out of it. • Achievements: Took the Gold medal in the World Championships in Sydney in 2000

  27. Edith Lowe • One of the oldest Olympians to lived and was 100 on June 2004 • Defender in the Austrian handball team who beat Germany 5-4 after being 4-1 down at half-time in the 1930 all-women games. • She was very fit since young, playing in the biggest sports club in Vienna and though it was tiring, she enjoyed it a lot.
