  1. Book BA reward seats for just £1 The cost-of-living crisis has us all trimming expenses where we can. Yet many of us still try to safeguard holidays, particularly as we recognise their positive effects on our mental health. If you’re trying to get the best of both worlds, you’ll naturally want to use your Avios points for flights. In fact, a survey by Avios group IAG shows 92% of Brits rely on loyalty programmes to boost their everyday spending with more than 50% seeking new ways to maximise the schemes’ worth. If you’re in saving mode, you can check what your next paid-for flights will earn you in points by using BA’s Avios calculator. When you’re ready to cash your points in, try teaming your Avios with BA’s Reward Flight Savers fixed price offers which let you offset the fees and taxes you usually pay in cash. Thanks to these deals you could book BA reward seats for as little as £1. Here are some European mini-break destinations where you can make big savings.

  2. Brussels from 18,500 Avios + £1 There’s so much more to the Belgium capital than the European Union headquarters. Start exploring at the Unesco-listed Grand Place market square, overlooked by the Gothic town hall. You can get a ubiquitous photo of the Manneken Pis peeing boy statue nearby. Brussels’ other famous landmark is the Atomium structure of linked silver balls containing museum exhibits you can access via hidden escalators. By contrast, Belgium’s prominence in the Art Nouveau movement means there are plenty of beautiful buildings in this style, notably the architect’s home Horta House. If cartoon boy detective Tintin was part of your childhood, you’ll want to visit the Herge Museum, dedicated to his creator on the city outskirts. You can see more of Tintin and other cartoon characters, including Smurfs, on a city mural trail and at the Belgium Comic Strip Centre. Eat: Belgium’s chocolates, beer, chips and waffles are among the best in the world and there are plenty of opportunities to indulge. The roads around Place du Chatelain and the church of St. Boniface are good for restaurants, while Brasserie Cantillon is among the historic breweries you can visit. Stay: Accommodation to consider includes the grand Hotel Metropole, the multi-coloured Pantone Hotel and the cool Jam hotel, which was converted from an art school. BA reward seats: Brussels has excellent reward seat availability between March and May. It’s a bit spotty over the summer but plenty of dates still have six seats each in economy and business. Daily availability is strong again from September.

  3. Vienna from 25,500 Avios + £1 in economy class Vienna offers enticing contrasts of grand palaces and cosy coffee shops. The Hofburg complex is an opulent must-see, incorporating royal apartments and the famous dancing horses of the Spanish Riding School. Kunsthistorisches Museum, filled with paintings by Old Masters is in another palatial setting, while Belvedere Palace is home to The Kiss and other Klimts. More contemporary art is the focus of the MuseumsQuartier. There are always classical concerts to book honouring locals Mozart and Strauss, besides top opera and ballet at the Staatsoper. The famous Wiener Riesenrad vintage Ferris Wheel is among the settings you can discover from the film noir The Third Man and the modern romantic classic Before Sunrise. Tours relating to the former will even take you down the historic sewers. From mid-November, Vienna’s Christmas markets make a charming reason to visit. Eat: Vienna’s famous coffee house culture is Unesco-listed. Café Central with its beautiful vaulted ceilings is a favourite. Other historic cake stops include cafes Sperl, Schwarzenberg and Hawelka. A bar and restaurant scene has grown around colourful food-focused Naschmarkt and trendy Gumpendorfer Strasse.

  4. Stay: Hotel options include MuseumsQuartier’s circus-themed 25 hours and Hotel Imperial, occupying a former prince's palace. BA reward seats: According to our Avios calculator, seat availability is excellent from October through the winter months. There are also some dates with fantastic availability in March and September. Paris from 19,500 Avios + £1 in economy class The perennial favourite city break still holds its charm. You’ve probably seen the Eiffel Tower, and the Louvre before, so unless you’re introducing children to the city, you can wander the flea markets and linger in bistros and bars. You might explore the village-style Montmartre around the Sacre Coeur and the arty Latin Quarter or visit the Jardin des Plantes Botanical Gardens, which includes a maze. Notre Dame is still being restored, but there are spectacular stained glass windows in Sainte Chapelle. You could also visit the Pantheon, the resting place of French notables from Victor Hugo to Marie Curie.

  5. Beyond the Louvre, get your fill of art at the Picasso and Rodin museums and the grand Musée d’Orsay. With time for a day trip, Monet’s home at Giverny is also possible and, of course, the glittering Palace of Versailles. Eat: In Paris, you’re spoilt for choice. ‘Bouillon’ restaurants are where busy locals eat simple classics in often historic surroundings. For special occasions consider Epicure at Le Bristol hotel where the chef holds four Michelin stars. The Montparnasse Tower meanwhile boasts Paris’s highest panoramic bar and restaurant with Eiffel tower views. Stay: Options include the gilded Shangri-La in a former royal residence; musicians’ favourite L’Hotel (the last residence of Oscar Wilde) and Hôtel Jeanne d’Arc, a stylish budget option. BA reward seats: Availability is excellent from mid-September to the year’s end. Many dates currently have six reward seats each in economy and business. Pisa from 23,500 Avios + £1 in economy class

  6. Tuscany gateway Pisa is a great option if you want to use your Avios points for flights somewhere with wider exploring possibilities. Piazza dei Miracoli ‘Square of Miracles’ is the Unesco-listed main square with a lawn surrounded by notable Romanesque and Gothic-style buildings. Near the famous leaning tower are an 11th-century cathedral, a baptistery known for its echoey acoustics and a monumental cemetery with Roman sculptures and frescos. Another grand square, Piazza delle Vettovaglie holds regular farmers’ markets where you can pick up edible treats. The historical ships museum is also worth a visit for its Roman craft excavated by archaeologists while strolling the three-kilometre walkway along the city walls offers you a different perspective. Pisa is perfectly placed for wider Tuscany. It’s a short hop to the beach at Marina di Pisa 12 miles away, while Florence, filled with Renaissance masterpieces, takes around an hour and mediaeval Lucca half that. It’s also a gateway for exploring the Chianti wine region amid the rolling hills of Tuscany. Eat: This is a university town so there’s decent nightlife. When it comes to something to eat, try Trattoria Sant’Omobono in part of an 11th-century church or the sharing platters at Pane e Vino. At vine-strewn La Pergoletta save room for the leaning tower desserts. Stay: City options include Relais dell'Orologio, a boutique hotel in a 14th-century townhouse and more modest Palazzo Cini, a stylish bolthole with a private garden. BA reward seats: There are still spots for economy and business class in April and May. From mid-September throughout winter, availability is excellent for both with six seats per cabin on many dates. Seen something that takes your fancy? Do you have enough Avios to make it happen?
