  2. What is SickleCell Anemia? • A group of disorders that cause red blood cells to become misshapen and break down. • It is passed down through families. (Genetic disorder) • Sickle cell disease is chronic but treatable and is not a death sentence. • Patients with sickle cell disease require comprehensive care

What Causes Sickle Cell Disease? • Both your parents need to pass the abnormal hemoglobin gene on to you in order for you to develop the disease. • If both your parents carry the defective gene, you have a 1 in 4 chance of inheriting the disease. • If a child is born with one defective hemoglobin-beta gene, he may become a carrier of the disease.

  4. Early Symptoms of SCD • Fatigue • Paleness • Rapid heart rate • Shortness of breath • Yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice) • Poor eyesight or blindness • Problems with thinking or confusion caused by small strokes
