  1. Is there a Vaccine for Cancer? Cancer is a disease in which some body cells grow uncontrollably and spread to the other parts of the body. This is one of the deadliest diseases known to mankind and yet we have come a long way to say that, ‘Yes, we can cure cancer.’ There has been significant progress in treating various forms of cancer, but the fear still persists. Sometimes we wonder if there is a vaccine for cancer. The answer can be both ‘yes’ or ‘no’ because there is no one vaccine that can prevent all types of cancer but there are a few vaccines available to prevent some types of cancer. Firstly, we need to understand what a vaccine is; a vaccine is a solution that is used to stimulate the body’s immune response against diseases. Vaccines train your immune system to create antibodies, just as it does when it is exposed to a disease. Most vaccines are given by injection, but some may be given orally as well. There are two types of cancer vaccines: Therapeutic vaccines and preventive vaccines. Preventive vaccines are designed to prevent cancer from developing in healthy individuals. Examples of preventive cancer vaccines include the human papillomavirus vaccine, which can prevent cervical, anal, and other types of cancers caused by the HPV virus, and the hepatitis B vaccine which can reduce the risk of liver cancer caused by the hepatitis B virus. Therapeutic cancer vaccines are designed to treat cancer by improving the immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells. Therapeutic cancer vaccines can be divided into two categories: Tumour cell-based vaccines and antigen- specific vaccines. Many cancer vaccines have been developed and tested in clinical trials, but none of them have proven to be effective in curing cancer. But some cancer vaccines have shown the possibility of slowing the growth of cancer and improving survival ratios. Global communities must focus on immunisation through HPV vaccine to prevent the spread of cancers through the HPV virus. Contrary to popular misconception, HPV vaccine is not solely for females. This can be given to men and women both. However, in our country where females are more subjected to cancers caused by HPV as compared to men who suffer from cancer owing to use of tobacco than HPV, this vaccine is more targeted on females.
