  5. Child of the Silent Night • attention- care & thoughtfulness • kindness- gentleness • understanding- comprehension • When did Laura’s parents realize Laura had lost her sight and hearing? • What were the steps in her recovery? Describe them in order.

  6. Sequence • Events in a story happen in a certain order. • When you read, think about what comes first, next, last, ….. • Identifying the sequence, or order, of events in a story can help you understand what you are reading.

  7. Summarize • Good readers sum up the important events in a story as they read. • Summarizing main events and the order in which they happened can help you remember important information.

  8. Vocabulary Words • Study your words and their definitions each day.

  18. Author’s Purpose • The author uses lots of descriptive words: • strong, peculiar smell • the bear was three times the size of Winn-Dixie • The author probably wants to entertain us.

  19. Black Bears • Genre: Expository nonfiction provides information about people, places, animal, and other things in the real world. • Sequence: Is sequence always important in what you read? • Summarize: Who can summarize this selection?

  20. Fluency: Tone of Voice • Your voice should rise and fall when you read questions, to emphasize words and where there is lots of emotion. • Your tone changes to match the way people speak.

  24. Research & Study Skills • A MAP is a drawing of a place that shows where something is or where something happened. • Every map has a LEGEND that has a COMPASS ROSE to show direction, a SCALE to show distance, and a KEY to show symbols.

  25. Research & Study Skills • A GLOBE is a sphere with a map of the world. • An ATLAS is a book of maps.
