  1. In this PowerPoint… • Poem (“April Rain Song” by Langston Hughes) • Ethical Questions Revisit • Oliver Twist Vivid Vocabulary Derivatives Activity • Social Issues Persuasive Task • Matrix Time

  2. April 10-11 Advanced English 6

  3. To Do Today:

  4. “April Rain Song” by Langston Hughes (1902-1967) Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a lullaby. The rain makes still pools on the sidewalk. The rain makes running pools in the gutter. The rain plays a little sleep-song on our roof at night— And I love the rain.

  5. Ethical Question: Is evil a stronger force than good?

  6. Oliver Twist Vocabulary and Derivatives

  7. Social Issues Performance Task Parts 1 and 2

  8. Comparison/Contrast Thesis Statement

  9. What social issues is Dickens pointing out with his installments of Oliver Twist? Remember when I told you to record page #’s as you discussed this stuff because you’d appreciate it later? It’s later! • We are looking for a single statement, paragraph, situation that REALLY shows the journalism side of Dickens’s work, NOT entire chapters or full characters…. • Be picky and strategic. Use 3 to 4 pieces of evidence. What are the strongest supporters?

  10. What do your paragraphs for Parts 1 and 2 need?

  11. Social Issues Persuasive Writing Task

  12. Sources for Current Events (Part 2) Paragraph

  13. Citations and Works Cited/References APA Format (Current Events) MLA Format (Oliver Twist)

  14. Social Issues Performance Task Part 3: Ethos, Pathos, and Logos Persuasive Piece (Future)

  15. Authorship (Who constructed the message?) • Format (This is not just the medium being used but also how the creators used specific elements for effect, i.e., color, sound, emphasis on certain words, amateur video, kids’ voices.) • Audience (Who is the person or persons meant to see the message? How will different people see the message?) • Content (This is not just the visible content but the embedded content as well which includes underlying assumptions of values or points of view; facts and opinions may be intermixed.) • Purpose (Why is the message being sent—is it meant to persuade, inform, entertain, sell, or a combination of these?) Things to Consider… A public service announcement (PSA) is an advertisement for the benefit of the public. The purpose of a public service announcement can be to raise awareness. (ex: Ads targeting tobacco cessation).

  16. Part 3: • We will be working on this IN CLASS. • Getting it done within the timeframe given is part of this, just like deadlines are reality for journalists in the field. • Let’s think! What sort of products are used to communicate awareness/PSA’s? Auditorymedia can be heard (e.g., music, radio shows, podcasts). Visualmedia can be viewed (e.g., television, video, Web-based materials, print ads). Writtenmedia includes text (e.g., newspapers, magazines, books, blogs). • “YouTube” video (informational video…awareness) • Possible formats for this? Touch Cast? What else? • Social Media Campaign • Infographic • Blog • News/Magazine Article • Advertising (TV/Radio) • Possible formats? Recordings? iMovie? • *Interview…add in?
