3. Pagina 3 In addition to trading opportunities of pork offal and grains, more implications will be in value added areas.
Currently, china’s meat industry model is still focusing on production and productivity and emphasizing output. But changing demand is reshaping the meat industry.
We find out that there are possibly six areas that meat industry in Western countries tend to have balanced focus. They are productivity, production, animal welfare, environment, quality, and sustainability. China meat industry is following the suit, as more and more enterprises realize that business model focusing only on productivity will no longer be successful. And some local companies are already taking steps to adjust itself to address the rest four areas.
During this process of shifting from current model to a sustainable model, China’s market offers excellent opportunities in the fields of food safety, breeding improvement, farm management, traceability, techniques in processing and packaging, and manure treatment and biogas technology.
Given China’s current gap in those areas, there is great potential for foreign companies to leverage advantages and play a role in China’s pork market.

Boundaries / scope of the system are variable
Different production systems within each species (e.g. organic versus conventional production)
Differences between regions and intensive versus extensive
Large effect of allocation methods

Different assumptions. Many knowledge gaps
It is a very young science (most studies are last 4 years)
Figures change significantly according to methodology of calculation.
17. Pagina 17 What to do with the current information?Inform decision making
Policy makers: climate, agriculture and food security policies
Private sector: benchmarking and identification of mitigation options
Consumer: too early for food choices
18. Pagina 18
Let us be guided by the science / a common methodology of calculation
A total meat chain approach is needed and let us not export the problem
The European meat industry in general:
recognises its responsibilities
recognises that all systems of meat production can be made more GHG efficient
supports a process of continuous improvement

No labelling of consumer products for CO2
There is a dual challenge for society and industry: Combining food security and climate change mitigation!
