  1. Circulation!

  2. The teen brain

  3. Where we’re headed • Sheep heart dissection next class • Rest of quarter: Circulation and Respiration • Quarter ends April 16th

  4. Test 2: • A- Wed. April 14th on circulation/respiration • D- Fri. April 16th on circulation/respiration • E- Thurs. April 15th on circulation/respiration • F- Tues. April 13th Quiz on circ/resp. • G- Thurs. April 15th

  5. Circulation!

  6. Circulation! • The average adult has about __ liters of blood circulating inside of his/her body. • Your system of blood vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries) is over __ km long. • Blood takes about __to complete one cycle through the vascular system. • In a 70-year lifetime, the average human heart beats ______times. • In a day, an adult’s heart pumps ____ liters of blood. • Point to your heart.

  7. Circulation! • The average adult has about _5_ liters of blood circulating inside of his/her body. • Your system of blood vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries) is over _96,000_ km long. • Blood takes about _20 seconds_to complete one cycle through the vascular system. • In a 70-year lifetime, the average human heart beats __2.5 billion____times. • In a day, an adult’s heart pumps __7500__ liters of blood. • Point to your heart.

  8. Circulation! Essential Questions: • How can we study the health of a heart, so we can improve the lives of everyone who has a heart?

  9. How would you construct a heart, if you were in charge of designing one?

  10. Today’s Learning Goals • Determine the importance of the human heart and blood • Identify the structures of a heart and the composition of blood • Know the complete pathway of blood through the human heart • (quizlet next class?)

  11. Importance of the Heart? • I need to get that blood circulating around to EVERY cell in my body! • Once the blood drops off what the cells need, then it needs to bring out the waste and get more of what’s needed!

  12. Blood! What does it do?(wouldn’t Coca Cola work instead?) • Transports- O2 and CO2 • Carries nutrients and hormones • Contains disease fighting substances • Has thermal energy • Ships waste!

  13. What is the secret recipe of blood?(Your Vampire friends will be happy you know) • Red Blood Cells (erythrocytes) • White Blood Cells (leukocytes) • Platelets (thrombocytes) • Plasma • The cells and platelets are all produced by bone marrow

  14. The heart is a pumping organ. Where does the blood GO? A Model Watch if you're brave • Arteries  Away from the heart • Veins  Toward the heart • But how can the blood get to each and every one of my cells?

  15. An image similar to what’s in your book.

  16. If Santiago were your circulatory system, come up with the places that represent the following- • ventricles • pacemaker • valves • arterioles • plasma • Hemoglobin

  17. Explore the Heart today: • Interactive heart questions, pt 1 • Don’t turn in, but KNOW and UNDERSTAND • You are free to type answers for your group and save file for printing later

  18. Stop and start a heart.... • watching the beating

  19. Quick review (hint: know for next class)! • Outline the pathway of blood, starting at left ventricle.

  20. Pathway of blood, starting at L.V. • Left ventricle -> aorta (BAM!) • Aorta -> arteries around body • Arteries -> capillaries around body • Capillaries -> veins • Veins -> Vena cava • Vena cava -> right atrium • Right atrium -> right ventricle • Right ventricle -> pulmonary artery • Pulmonary artery -> lungs • Lungs -> pulmonary vein • Pulmonary vein -> left atrium • Left atrium -> left ventricle
