How Are Tutors Most Helpful? The decision to hire a tutor is one that many parents choose not to do for different reasons like money or time, but those are just negatives that turn you away from something that has way more benefits than consequences. Some people say, “What is the point of tutoring when I can get public school for free?” To those people, here are just a few of the ways that tutors are able to help you achieve your dreams. Get Ahead A lot of people think that the only students that need tutoring are the ones that are slower than their peers, but that is just a fraction of the market. It is just a
small piece of the pie, but there are other demographics, like those that are trying to jump ahead. To talk about my personal story, I was bored out of my mind in elementary school because I was way ahead of the class in math. It got to the point where I was falling asleep in class and it made my teachers frustrated. They would try to get on me for sleeping, but I would wake up, answer the questions correctly, and go back to dozing, so what could they really say? My parents talked to the school about challenging me, but they were not equipped to help. First, a group of three students, including me, started doing private math lessons in school, but the school realized pretty quickly that this was not sustainable. Instead of sending me to a magnet school where I would have to give up all my friends, my parents got me a math tutor to help me push forward. I was recently talking to my mom about it and she remembered just how much it helped. The first session with the tutor, I was humbled mathematically in a way I never had been before. Finally challenged, I started loving math. I skipped a grade in math and was more engaged in class. I still fell asleep in high school math, but that was because I did not sleep enough. I just knew that I loved the challenge and that was something that I could only get with my math tutor. More Attention I went to public school, which is commonly known for having lots of students and not enough teachers. My class sizes were regularly in the 25-30 student range, which is probably too many students. When it came time to get college recommendations, finding the teachers I connected with was hard because I always felt like I was hidden in the background getting solid grades while the teacher had a few pets and a bunch of strugglers that got more attention. There are tons of students that get lost in the shuffle in large classes, which is a great reason to start looking into tutoring. The tutor-student relationship is one-on- one, which means that you have no choice but to build a relationship. If you get lost as one of one, that is on you.
