Seljalandsfoss Located in Southern Iceland the Seljalandsfoss is formed when Seljalands River falls almost 200 feet down into a serene pool. Having a small cave behind waterfall, Iceland is the only place where you can stand inside a fall and watch the sunset through the curtain of falling water. Skógafoss Skógafoss is another of the top 5 waterfalls in Iceland located in southern regions. It is formed due to the river Skóga falling almost 200ft high down a cliff. It gets water from the glaciers Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull and the mist near the falls is so thick that on sunny days at least one rainbow is always present. As per the local folklore, a Viking has hidden his treasure in a cave behind the falls. No-one has yet been able to retrieve it. One person did manage to get his hold on it, but only returned with the golden handle of the chest. The Skógafoss fall is a popular fishing destination from July to October for locals and also the starting point of the 22km long Fimmvörðuháls hiking trail. A climb up to the top of the falls gives a magnificent view of Iceland’s southern coastline. www.wildvoyager.com
Gullfoss Gullfoss literally means “Golden waterfall” in Icelandic due to the golden color it gets during sunny days. It is one of the most popular attractions in any Iceland waterfall tour. It forms when River Hvita falls over two cascades 36 ft. and 69 ft. down into a 2.5 km long crevasse. It is part of the Golden Circle tour together with Thingvellir and Geysir. www.wildvoyager.com
Godafoss Goðafoss waterfall is one of the best waterfalls in Iceland in its northern regions. It is formed when the river Skjálfandafljót falls from 39 ft. It can be translated to ‘waterfalls of the Gods’ or ‘waterfalls of the Chieftain’. The falls also have a folk story that is related to the adoption of Christianity in Iceland. There are two approach paths to the falls from the east and west side, and both ways make for spectacular views of the falls. www.wildvoyager.com
Hraunfossar Hraunfossar literally means ‘waterfall of the lava’ and is aptly named so because it is located in the Hallmundarhraun lava field where the glacial water from Langjökull glacier filters through the lava field and later joins the River Hvita. www.wildvoyager.com
