Definitions • Computers are electronic devices that accept data, process data, produce output and store results. • Accepting data=input • Processing data= applications • Produces output=output • Stores results=storage
Input • The computer accepts input in many ways: • The keyboard, the mouse, a digital camera, a video camera, other external devices
Processing • The computer processes the data that is input through software programmes or applications. Some people think of “processing” as though the computer were “thinking”. • Software Examples: MS Office, Windows, Skype, Keynote, Internet explorer,
Output • The computer lets you see the products coming out of the processing phase in various forms: • Print or Electronic • Screen based, or hard copy • The output can come as text, graphics, sound or as multi-media
Storage • The data, and the results of the current processing are stored to start with in the main memory of the computer . This is what is referred to as RAM. • However, RAM is not a permanent place to store your data. It is best to use auxiliary storage devices. • Examples: floppy disks, CDs, DvDs, memory sticks, external hard drives, etc.
