How IIHS Rating Works • The IIHS evaluates a vehicles safety by how well a vehicle protects its occupants during crash and how a vehicle uses technology to avoid or lessen the severity of a crash. • Vehicles are evaluated in five tests showing crash impact for moderate overlap front, small overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints. • The vehicles are then rated good, acceptable, marginal, or poor based on their crashworthiness performance. • In the second area of crash avoidance and mitigation, ratings are given based on the front crash prevention systems in place and how they perform on the track during tests. • The ratings for crash avoidance and mitigation are basic, advanced, or superior.
