What Is Cambridge Analytica Incident And How Facebook Is Going To Prevent Such Data Breaches In The Future Facebook has 2.2 billion active users and 600K active advertisers, but the Social Media Giant faced a big conflict recently. Analytica data scandal and came forward through the Facebook post. He said: “We have a responsibility to protect your data, and if we can’t then we don’t deserve to serve you” By sharing Mark’s post, Sandberg (COO at Facebook) said on her Facebook post, “I deeply regret that we didn’t do enough to deal with it,” She further said: “You deserve to have your information protected — and we’ll keep working to make sure you feel safe on Facebook. Your trust is at the core of our service. We know that, and we will work to earn it.” 2
How Is Facebook Going To Re-Pay? Cambridge Analytica has data of 300,000 Facebook users and their friends, which they collected from Aleksandr Kogan. He’s the researcher at Cambridge University and founded one psychology quiz app through which he collected Facebook user’s data. Now: Facebook is making strict policies against apps like “Kogan” from collecting user’s and their friends’ data, without their permission. The good news is, Facebook will notify users whose data was collected by Cambridge Analytica and they will also: A) Investigate apps having Facebook data and may ask for audits to any app found with ‘suspicious activity’. B) They will also restrict developer’s data access, just to prevent such breeches in the future. C) This is the most important update. Facebook will soon launch a tool at the top of the Facebook’s news feed. This tool represents the apps having access to your data and it will also give you the option to revoke access at any time. 3
These all update represents, Mark Zuckerberg is very serious about this data breach and taking some strict action against it to prevent such malicious activities in the future. Facebook has enacted 6 core initiatives to prevent companies from getting user’s data without their authorization. The 6 enacts are, 1. Review your platform Facebook will review all the apps having access to a large amount of Facebook user’s data and may ban/audit the app, found in suspicious activity. 2. Tell people about data misuse They are going to tell the Facebook users whose data/information might be misused through the third-party apps. 3. Turn off access to unused apps If you haven’t used the third-party apps for 3 months in a row, Facebook will stop sharing your data with that app. 4. Restrict Facebook login data Facebook is going to make the change in its login data. So, apps can only see the username, email address, and profile photo. 4
5. Encourage people to manage the apps they use Facebook will help people to manage the apps they use on Facebook and inform them about what information apps can get. 6. Reward people who find vulnerabilities Soon, Facebook is going to increase bug bounty program. So, more people can actively participate and report to them, if they find any misuse of data by app developers.
