  3. Youmayhaveheardoffinasteride asPropecia®orProscar®. Propecia is a brand namethat’susedtomarket finasteride sold by thepharmaceuticalcompanyMerck&Co. Originally, finasteride was approved bytheFDA as medication for benignprostatichyperplasia,or BPH -- aform of non-cancerous prostateenlargement--underthebrandnameProscar®. Severalyearslater,itwasapprovedforhairlossandsoldas Propecia.Today,bothversionsoffinasteride-- thehigher-dose version used to treat an enlarged prostate gland and the lower-dose version that’s used for hair loss -- are available as generics under a varietyofbrandnames.
