Types of Advocacy • Policy – change in policy/laws • Cause – action on behalf of a class • Case – situation affecting an individual or small group
Basic Advocacy Strategies and Their Use • Collaboration • Campaign • Contest
When Advocacy is Needed • System unable to respond • Rights of constituent ignored or denied • Situation of constituent does not fit policy or routine • Constituent lacks sufficient skill, knowledge, confidence, or power
Basic Considerations • Confront your hesitance to act • Reaffirm your values and ethics • Recognize that you have skills • Involve constituents in the effort • Recognize common issues and link constituents • Help constituents become teachers
Advocacy Principles and Tips • Know your issue well • Know the relevant rights, rules, and regulations • Know how the system works • Get a partner • Get help • Have a vision of what is better
More Principles and Tips • Recognize and communicate awareness of legitimate interests • Link the issue to values • Use emotion appropriately • Secure clear agreement and time tables
