Italian born (uncle was a photographer) • Photographer, silent movie actress, model • Often published in left-wing and communist publications • Moved to Cali in 1913 • Assisted Edward Weston (pepper photo) in the darkroom making his prints. Then became his model, and then his mistress • Moved to Mexico and lived the bohemian lifestyle while promoting communism • Worked with Manuel Alvarez-Bravo (hair photo) and Diego Rivera when she became the main photographer for the Mexican mural movement • Was deported from Mexico and finally settled in Russia • Worked for the communist government (spy?) • Went back to live in Mexico under a pseudonym • Was thought to have been killed in Mexico
