Important Theories and Research Dichotic listening- affecting or relating to the two ears differently in regard to a conscious aspect (as pitch or loudness) or a physical aspect (as frequency or energy) of sound. Ahern et al. Alain et al. Students were fastest at identifying targets defined by frequency when frequency separations in high- rate tone sequences were greater than one octave.

  3. Research Question Does there appear to be an effect of music on men and women’s abilities to concentrate on an auditory dialogue?

  4. Hypotheses • I hypothesize that women will significantly answer more questions correctly than men. • Null Hypothesis- I hypothesize that there will be no correlation between gender and the number of questions correctly answered.

  5. Operational Definitions • Slow Tempo music- Phish, Brian and Robert (Story of the Ghost album).(played for 1.5 min) • Fast Tempo Music- Phish, Limb by Limb (Story of the Ghost album).(played for 1.5 min) • Control, no music- No music was played, just the dialogue that was pre-recorded of a man and a woman. • Dependent variable/Correct answers- Recorded as the number of answers completed correctly within 2 minutes.

Significance For All!! • Tempo- Significant at .000, signifying that there was a main effect of tempo. • Gender- Significant at .003, signifying that there was a main effect of gender(I.e, women performed better than males did). • Tempo & Gender- Significant at .000, signifying that there was an interaction between the gender of the participant and the tempo of the music. * Computed using alpha = .05

  9. Research Question Does there appear to be an effect of music on men and women’s abilities to concentrate on an auditory dialogue?

Methodology • Due to a lack of participants I was forced to weigh the data. • Sometimes there were odd numbers of people, meaning different levels of distractibility and concentration. • Lab Rat Syndrome (laboratory wasn’t equal to the regular environment that most kids study in. • Future possibilities- having two stimuli dubbed over each other, coming from the same output device. This could help to discover better study methods and habits.
