How to find the right support for my loved one living with disability
If you’re supporting a loved one living with disability, you may have experienced a number of challenges in securing the right support for their everyday needs and experiences. Thankfully, as Australians, access to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can provide significant support in the form of resources, services and funding.
The role of the NDIS The NDIS supports people with disability, their families and carers with funding from federal, state, and territory governments. Its objectives are to promote independence, access to necessary supports, agency, and control, consistency of disability services access, and high-quality supports. Eligibility is based on access requirements, including residency, age, and disability or early intervention needs.
How the NDIS provides individualised supports NDIS provides support to eligible individuals to design their own supports according to their needs, goals, and disability impact. This includes education, employment, social participation, independence, living arrangements, health, and wellbeing. Funding covers personal needs, transport, workplace assistance, therapies, household tasks, equipment, home modifications, mobility and vehicle modifications. Participants work with the NDIA to develop an individual NDIS plan that promotes autonomy and agency, enabling choice and control over their supports.
Community organisations and informal support In addition to NDIS support, Australians with disabilities can access community organizations and informal support sources. These resources are available for mental health, employment, intervention services, family support, community-building activities, and education. Support is divided into mainstream, community, and informal categories, referring to resources outside of the NDIS. Mainstream supports Community supports Informal supports
