Nationwide Plastic Surgery Teams Multi-disciplinary Free to access Invitation through professional bodies The professionals able to invite their colleagues Invitation to Participate
Actual Participation • 1 Manager • 10 Therapists (OT and Physiotherapists) • NO nurses ! • Why?
Evaluation – What went well? • Overall APPS face to face meetings, seminars and events • Networking amongst Professionals both intra and inter ! • Realisation that learning could be practically based • Students who didn’t think they were capable of Masters level study --realising that they were ! • Giving them the confidence to go further to a full Masters degree. • People sorry it’s not continuing
Evaluation – What did not go well? • Students who didn’t have confidence in their own ability , and • We couldn’t manage to instil it • Initial teething problems with SMART house • Difficulty with people travelling from National destinations • Difficulty understanding reflection and Critical M level thinking • Tended to be operational/Basic degree level report style • Occasionally e mail let us down in tutoring
Student Experiences • Very positive verbal feedback • Some students have said they didn’t realise how hard a Masters Unit was • Very sorry that Nurses didn’t engage in Masters although attended all APPS events • Many approaching to do it next year BUT • There is no next year as the MA is ending in its current format --seeking sponsors • Drs are now approaching --Sceptical initially ? No Psychologists engaged
What would we do differently next time ? • Work even harder to enthuse the nurses e.g. engage with the RCN not just Plastic Surgery professional Body • Seek more strong advocates from each professional group • Include Psychologists and Junior Doctors • Seek higher budget --it was on a shoe- string! • Have even more frequent national education events ( bi monthly) • Publish !
In Summary • It worked! despite the low budget. • The team approach was essential and e-support invaluable • The students supported and learnt from each other over the Net • Paying attention to the robustness of the academic side throughout gave it validity • Recruiting professionally relevant experts to lead the learning process was very important for students • It would be great to be running it for another year to iron out the minor glitches, but • The Professional networking and confidence building alone were worth it
