Types of documents to consult • Encyclopedias/Dictionaries • Books & Exhibition catalogues • Book chapters • Journal articles • Theses or dissertations • Check bibliographies which can lead to other documents
Identifying scholarly publications • Check the publisher of journals or books • Is it a university or scholarly press • Check the author and his/her affiliation • Check web sites of publishers and search on author’s names • For journal articles, the length of article can be an indication • Usually includes analyses, methodologies and research
Encyclopedias/Dictionaries • Encyclopedias on Art History Subject Guide Concordia Libraries • Articles define major methodologies and provide bibliographies of relevant texts • Specialized dictionaries/encyclopedias: • Encyclopedia of comparative iconography
Search Tip: Check for alternative relevant key words • Example: CLUES - do a keyword search: • iconograph* • Check the Abstract and Subject Headings of results for other keywords to use in subsequent searches for more results. • art themes motives • symbolism in art • politics in art

Prepare search: choose Keywords • Although it may be possible to find documents that discuss both an art work or artist and a methodology, you will often need to search for each aspect separately. • First read about artist or art work to identify keywords related to the work: • petrushka • puppets • painting • expressionism • figuration • 1930s canadian • workers
If you don’t find enough documents, broaden search • You may find documents on well-known art works and artists and a specific methodological approach. If you don’t find documents on a specific art work, try searching on the artist’s name, media of work, group(s) artist belonged to, period, country. For example: • Check for documents on work or artist and methodology • “paraskeva clark” and petrushka and “social history” • Broaden search by removing one of your keywords • “paraskeva clark” and social history • Try broadening one of the concepts related to art work and methodology • paint* and 1930s and “social history” • Search on methodology • “social history” and method*
Tips for finding sources on methodologies • Search on names of theorists • Roland Barthes • Search the approach with the word methodology: • semiotic* and method* - • Check for relevant terms in subject headings and do another search: • “Art history” and semiotics • “Art criticism” and semiotics • “art theory” and semiotics • Try using alternate terms when appropriate • social history in some databases is expressed as society and art
