Thinking outside traditional “sectors” • Recent CGR report for FLP WIRED concludes • While technical competencies - are important to the success of many Finger Lakes firms, it is management competencies that set the outstanding companies apart from the rest. • Systems & process integration • Strategic sensibility • Customer responsiveness • Talent identification and development • Quality and operational excellence • Entrepreneurial ethos
Good News! • Also important are enabling competencies • While our study concentrated on the Finger Lakes area, the rest of western NY is probably similar • These management and enabling competencies allow the Finger Lakes to be globally competitive in a wide variety of technologies, products, and services.
Areas of Promise • CIMS Sustainability Institute • CGR study suggests SI will expand the number of senior researchers, the physical plant and technology transfer support in: • sustainable design and manufacturing • fuel cell research • renewable energy research
Solar Energy Possibilities • RIT R&D at NanoPower Research Labs to support the solar energy sector • The American Solar Energy Society (ASES) SOLAR 2009 in Buffalo • Reasons include: • Support for renewable energy by local leaders • Recent economic development • Opportunity to partner with policy-makers to expand the use of renewable energy
Wind Energy • Maple Ridge Wind Farm in Lewis County, 240 MW wind farm as well as many others • Many potential sites for wind, including capacity of approximately 214 megawatts in Buffalo city area
Economic Impact of Wind in Franklin County • Recent CGR study of 128 MW proposed wind farm concludes: • Wind is compatible “alternative crop” for Franklin county farmers • Generates modest annual employment – 29 jobs (direct and spillover) with earnings of $1.14 million • Generates sales tax revenues from landowners’ expenditures
Home to some “Green” Manufacturing • GM’s Tonawanda (NY) Engine Plant, the world’s largest engine manufacturing facility, has achieved landfill-free status in its manufacturing operations by reducing waste generation, recycling and converting waste to energy. • More than 95% of the waste materials from the plant’s manufacturing operations (23,233 tons annually) are recycled and nearly 5% (or 1,060 tons annually) are converted to energy at waste-to-energy facilities.
